| • Girls Aloud |
Formed on reality tv-show, 'Popstars: The Rivals', in December 2002, Girls Aloud have lead on to become Britain's most successful girl group in history. With a record-breaking 18 Top-10 singles, 5 platinum-selling albums, 4 sell-out tours and a long list of awards and nominations, Girls Aloud are a force to be reckoned with - and there is no stopping them now. For those of you who are new to the Girls Aloud scene, or have been living under a rock for the past 6 years, here is the low-down on all you need to know about the girls.Girls Aloud came into existence through the television series, 'Popstars: The Rivals.' The aim of the show was to produce two bands, a boy band and a girl band, both of whom would release their single at the same time in a bid to become the Christmas #1. The girls battled through weeks of intense competition to make it into the band and eventually made the final five, under direction of Louis Walsh. Their debut single, 'Sound Of The Underground, sold a staggering 200,00+ copies in its first week of sales and landed the girls the #1 spot, beating off competition from One True Voice. One True Voice are now no longer existent and disappeared from the music scene after poor sales of their second single. 'Sound Of The Underground', however, went on to sell half-a-million copies and spent 4 weeks at the top spot; it is still, to this day, the girls' most successful and well-recognised single. The girls followed this up with second single, 'No Good Advice', entering the charts at #2; debut album 'Sound Of The Underground', also charted at #2 behind Justin Timberlake's 'Justified.' Third single, 'Life Got Cold' was the final track to be released from the original album and charted at #3 in August 2003. Later on in 2003, the girls went on to record a cover of the Pointer Sisters' classic, 'Jump', which was used on the soundtrack for the film, 'Love Actually.' The song entered #2 on the UK charts and is still very popular among compilation albums and dancefloor classics. To follow this up, the girls re-released their 'Sound Of The Underground' album, featuring a new cover, packaging, sleeve and tracklisting. No further tracks were released from this album, however, despite speculation that 'You Freak Me Out' would be the next single. The plans were scrapped and no further releases were made. |
